I am a Health Services Researcher and Behavioral Scientist.
Susan C. Pitt, MD, MPHS
University of Michigan - Ann Arbor
Dr. Pitt is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of Endocrine Surgery Research at the University of Michigan. She is passionate about reducing unnecessary surgical care and interventions for patients with cancer. Clinically, Dr. Pitt treats patients with both benign and malignant diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Her research expertise includes advanced training in behavioral and decision science as well as behavioral intervention design and testing with clinical trials. Dr. Pitt hopes to improve the clinical and long-term outcomes of patients with thyroid cancer by reducing the adverse effects of unnecessary or overly extensive surgery.
Dr. Pitt became interested in overtreatment and unnecessary care after observing patients with thyroid cancer experience life-altering consequences of unnecessary treatment for their disease, a disease that was not life-threatening for them. The American Thyroid Association guidelines changed in 2015, as she entered clinical practice. The "less is more" theme of the new guidelines led Dr. Pitt to develop strategies to de-implement overly extensive or unnecessary surgery for patients with low- and very low-risk thyroid cancer. Her current project aims to decrease unnecessary total thyroidectomy (removal of the entire thyroid) when less extensive and less risky approaches are available with equivalent oncologic outcomes.
